The Brand New Bean You’ve Loved All Along

High Oleic Soybeans Created with Same Genetics as Top-Performing Commodity Varieties

High oleic soybeans are one of the latest and greatest innovations in the soy industry. Producing an oil with a favorable fat profile as well as superior cooking properties, these game-changing soybeans are starting to make their way into commercial kitchens and food manufacturing operations across the country. To meet growing demand, U.S. soybean farmers will have to continue increasing high oleic soybean acreage to 16 million planted acres, which is a big increase from today’s planted acres.

As lucrative as that profit potential sounds, some farmers may hesitate to invest in a new, untested product on their farm. Lucky for them, most of what goes into high oleic soybeans is neither new nor untested. Instead of building high oleic soybeans from the ground up, geneticists at Monsanto and DuPont Pioneer have taken farmers’ favorite beans and their elite agronomic packages and added the high oleic trait to them.

Whereas commodity soybeans are a work truck with a great engine, ample horsepower and off-road capabilities, high oleic soybeans are that same exact truck with a supercharger added in. Both Monsanto and DuPont Pioneer have worked to make their high oleic varieties perform at the same level as their commodity soybeans, keeping their farmers top-of-mind.

Vistive® Gold  field trials are taking place now through Monsanto’s Ground Breakers® program,” says Rob Nixon, Monsanto North America traits and systems marketing lead. “Ground Breakers trials provide farmers firsthand experience with pipeline products under commercial-scale planting conditions. This program combines full-field and small-scale approaches to optimize farmers’ experiences, training and education opportunities.”

Extensive field-testing was conducted to ensure high oleic varieties stack up with their commodity counterparts.

“More than 700 on-farm yield trials have confirmed Plenish® high oleic soybeans are yielding the same as our leader package of products. Even in years of tough agronomic conditions, Plenish beans are up there with our best,” says Russ Sanders, DuPont Pioneer food and industry markets director. “To make that happen, Pioneer applies the same product advancement factors to our Plenish varieties as we do our most elite commodity varieties. The end result is that farmers should see Plenish soybeans perform just as well our leader products.”

Along with proven performance, high oleic soybean farmers can also look forward to receiving a premium for growing the specialty crop. Coupled with the long-term value growth they are expected to bring the industry, high oleic soybeans are a true win-win for farmers.

“Vistive Gold soybeans just may be the most profitable acres on your farm,” says Nixon. “Vistive Gold soybeans can provide increased profits to your bottom line while also delivering a non-toxic, renewable resource for biosynthetic industrial oils and an alternative to traditional cooking oils.”

“When you think about the solid yield performance and premiums that can generate another $25 to $30 per acre, it makes sense to give Plenish high oleic soybeans a try,” says Sanders. “High oleic beans are an important near-term profit opportunity and an important product innovation that will help the soybean industry long-term.”
